About Me

5I graduated from Bangor University with a first-class BMus (Hons) degree in Music before embarking on the MA course at Bangor with the support of the Arts and Humanities Research Council, which I passed with distinction. My PhD was again funded by the AHRC and undertaken at Bangor, and explored the use of minimalist and post-minimal music for film and television. During my studies at Bangor I received several School of Music prizes including the Phillip Pascall and D. E. Parry Williams Memorial Prizes, in addition to the Welsh-medium Dr John Roberts Jones Prize awarded by the University. I had previously received the Mr Jeffreys & Mrs Christina Jeffreys Memorial Prize for Wales by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Since graduating, I have gained considerable experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules on a wide range of subject areas including music analysis, early music history, 19th and 20th century music history, composition and ethnomusicology.

My research interests include minimalist and postminimal music; analysis; film music analysis; performance of early 20th century French piano music, and music in Wales.  I have delivered papers at international conferences and study days around the United Kingdom, also in Belgium, Finland, Malta, Poland and the USA. In 2015, I published a monograph on Philip Glass’s film music with Ashgate Publishing (see my research page for further information).

In July 2016, I was admitted a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music with distinction as a result of my recital examination at St Paul’s School, London which featured a programme of Maurice Ravel’s piano works.

I became an examiner on the Classical and Jazz panel for Trinity College, London in 2019.

As a composer and performer, I have collaborated with Bangor University, M-SParc and Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol on a creative environmental project, which led to a livestream premiere performance from the Arts and Innovation Centre Pontio in Bangor in 2020. Further information may be found here.
